Brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi at FAMU Partner with Divine Nine Sororities for Month of Literacy and Mentorship at Brownsville Preparatory Institute

Throughout Black History Month, the brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.’s Alpha Xi Chapter joined forces with members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., and Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. to serve students at Brownsville Preparatory Institute through literacy, mentorship, and cultural empowerment.

The collaboration took place as part of Kappa Alpha Psi’s national Room to Read initiative, a program focused on promoting literacy and educational engagement among young students.
Throughout the month, members of the Divine Nine visited classrooms and spent time reading with students, leading conversations about Black history, and providing affirmations and encouragement designed to uplift and inspire the next generation. The sessions created space for meaningful discussions where students were reminded that their voices matter and that their futures are filled with possibility.

Beyond reading books, the volunteers emphasized the importance of confidence, curiosity, and community support. By sharing stories, highlighting Black historical figures, and engaging students in thoughtful dialogue, the group worked to make learning both empowering and culturally meaningful.
The month of service concluded with a $500 donation to support early literacy programming at the school, ensuring that the impact of the initiative continues long after Black History Month ends.

Through their partnership, members of the Divine Nine demonstrated the power of unity and service. When fraternities and sororities come together with a shared commitment to uplifting young people, the results can be felt far beyond the classroom.
