Black Greekdom Mourns the Death of Delta Sigma Theta’s Dr. Danielle Spencer

The Black Greek community is mourning the loss of Dr. Danielle Spencer, an actress, veterinarian, and beloved member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., who transitioned on August 11, 2025, at the age of 60.

Spencer was best known to millions as Dee Thomas, the quick-witted little sister on the classic 1970s sitcom What’s Happening!! Her unforgettable one-liners made her a household name and a cherished part of Black television history. She reprised the role in What’s Happening Now!! in the 1980s, cementing her legacy in Black pop culture.

But Spencer’s life was not limited to the screen. After attending the University of California, Davis, where she was initiated into Delta Sigma Theta’s Lambda Xi Chapter during her sophomore year, she transferred to UCLA (where she was a member of the sorority’s Pi Chapter) and later earned her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Tuskegee University. In 1996, she officially became a veterinarian, fulfilling a lifelong passion for caring for animals.

In 2014, Spencer made history as the first child actor inducted into the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, an honor that recognized her enduring contributions to Black cultural memory.

Despite facing health challenges, including a breast cancer diagnosis in 2014 and brain surgery in 2018, Spencer remained a source of strength, purpose, and positivity.

Members of Delta Sigma Theta, are remembering Dr. Spencer not only as a trailblazer but as a sister whose life exemplified talent, impact, and service. “Your light will forever shine,” the Farwest Region posted in a tribute to her.

From the soundstages of Hollywood to the halls of veterinary medicine, Dr. Danielle Spencer embodied what it means to live with purpose. Her story is one of evolution, resilience, and deep-rooted pride in Black excellence.
