Leadership Highlight: Tougaloo College’s SGA President Nyaia Liddell

In an effort to highlight the people who are leading graduate universities  across the nation, we at Watch The Yard reached out to Tougaloo College and did an interview with Nyaia Liddell the Student Government Association president.

The position of SGA president of a is a highly respected role and there is a special pride that one takes. Liddell, who is majoring in Biology, is a current senior and a Fall 2019 initiate of Delta Sigma Theta.

We interviewed Liddell, and talked to her about her position, goals, future and what it means to hold this type of leadership position in 2020.

What is the biggest thing you’ve learned as an SGA president so far? 

The biggest thing I have learned as SGA President is people may do you dirty and play the victim but you still have to fight for what is right

What made you decide to attend Tougaloo for undergrad?

I decided to attend Tougaloo College because of its rich history. 

How has Tougaloo molded you into the person you are today?

Tougaloo has molded me to love myself as a black woman.

What specific initiatives have you headed up this year and how do you think they will improve the school and surrounding community?

Pass/fail, grade scale change, administrators accountability, new programs.

How is your school currently responding to the coronavirus and what is your SGA administration doing to help students?

They are doing their best.

How is the coronavirus affecting SGA elections for next year? 

Everything is online.

What does leadership mean to you?

Leadership is working for a change but with out wanting recognition

We now live in a digital world, what do you think schools need to do to represent themselves online in 2020?

More hands on with students personally

Why do you think Watch The Yard is important to Black students and college culture? 

Watch The Yard shows black excellence and uplifting blacks.

What do you plan on doing after graduation?

My plans after graduation is to get my masters.
