Hampton University Just Announced It’s New School of Religion

Hampton University revealed the establishment of its new School of Religion this week.

The news was delivered during the Hampton University Ministers’ Conference through a heartfelt video featuring Rev. Dr. Debra L. Haggins, University Chaplain and Executive Director of HUMC, with remarks from Hampton University President Darrell K. Williams.

The University has been collaborating with the Ministers’ Conference for 100 years.

“Given that we’ve hosted the minister’s conference for over a century – in terms of timing, I think this is long overdue,” President Williams stated. “Although we are not a religious institution, it is certainly a part of our fabric and our foundation. We see the development of the School of Religion as a natural progression. It’s not revolutionary. It is, in fact, evolutionary.”

According to the press release issued by Hampton, The School of Religion aims to not only transform the academic landscape but also extend the University’s reach to a global community of leaders who are passionate about exploring crucial issues such as race, class, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, religious tradition, and ideology. The school will tackle various special topics, including the intersection of faith and activism, preaching to first-generation Christian communities, and addressing the unique needs of the Black community. These discussions will provide a comprehensive exploration of the contemporary Christian experience.

The School of Religion will offer degrees at the Associate, Bachelor, and Master levels, as well as the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Public Theology and Community Engagement and Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) in Pastoral Leadership and Congregational Development.
