Black Greekdom Mourns the Death of U.S. Congressman and Alpha Phi Alpha Brother Charles B. Rangel

The Black Greek community is mourning the loss of U.S. Congressman Charles B. Rangel, a legendary statesman, decorated war veteran, and proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., who passed away at the age of 94.

Brother Rangel, initiated into the Alpha Gamma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha in Fall 1964 and a Life Member of the Fraternity, was a towering figure in American politics. Representing New York’s 13th Congressional District for nearly five decades, he served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1971 to 2017. A Harlem native, he was affectionately known as the “Lion of Lenox Avenue.”

His legacy spans 46 years in Congress, where he rose to chair the powerful House Ways and Means Committee and co-founded the Congressional Black Caucus. A veteran of the Korean War, Rangel earned degrees from New York University and St. John’s University School of Law before defeating fellow Alpha Brother Rev. Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. to begin his storied political career.

In a statement released by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the organization honored Rangel as a 2019 recipient of its prestigious Alpha Award of Merit and reflected on his enduring impact. “He fought tirelessly for affordable housing, urban revitalization, fair tax policies, and equal opportunities for all Americans,” the Fraternity noted.

Rangel was also the last surviving founding member of the influential “Gang of Four,” a Harlem-based political alliance that shaped New York City politics for generations.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. extended its deepest condolences to Rangel’s family, loved ones, constituents, and all who were inspired by his life of service.

As the nation reflects on his contributions, Brother Charles B. Rangel remains etched in history as a champion for justice, equity, and the advancement of Black communities.
