What is the biggest thing you’ve learned as a student government president so far?
Every day brings new challenges, perspectives, and responsibilities, and I’ve learned that effective leadership requires being flexible enough to adjust, yet disciplined enough to stay aligned with my goals. I’ve also learned how essential it is to be relatable and accessible listening to students, understanding their needs, and leading with empathy builds trust and unity. Above all, this role has taught me responsibility: owning decisions, being accountable to those I represent, and leading with integrity. Balancing adaptability, relatability, and responsibility has strengthened my leadership and helped me stay the course while growing in the process.
What made you decide to attend Allen University for undergrad?
I decided to attend Allen University even though it was a school I had never heard of before. As I explored my options and learned more about the campus, its values, and its close-knit community, I felt a strong sense that it was the right place for me. Once I made up my mind and committed to Allen, I knew I had made the right choice. The environment, support system, and opportunities for leadership and growth have confirmed that Allen was exactly where I was meant to be for my undergraduate experience.

How has Allen University molded you into the person you are today?
Through its close-knit community, Allen taught me the value of accountability—not just to myself, but to those around me. I’ve learned to lead with respect, honor relationships, and remain grounded in my values. The university’s emphasis on family and community has shaped how I show up for others, making me more approachable, engaged, and committed to creating spaces where everyone feels seen, supported, and valued.

What specific initiatives have you headed up this year (or are planning) and how do you think they will improve the school and surrounding community?
This year, I led several initiatives focused on student engagement, wellness, and career readiness. One key effort was improving communication between students and administration through listening sessions and advocacy, helping ensure student concerns were heard and addressed.
I also helped launch a student wellness initiative that promoted mental health awareness, recovery support, and access to campus and community resources, creating a more supportive environment for student success. Additionally, I supported a career and leadership initiative that connects students to internships, professional development, and leadership opportunities.
Looking ahead, I plan to expand community service and outreach efforts that strengthen the university’s relationship with the surrounding community while encouraging students to give back and grow as leaders.

How is your student government administration/school currently working on attending to the mental health of students?
We are focused on fostering a safe, supportive environment where students feel comfortable acknowledging their mental health needs and seeking help without stigma. Through open dialogue, advocacy, and collaboration with campus resources, we aim to ensure students feel heard, supported, and empowered to prioritize their well-being.
What does leadership mean to you?
Leadership, to me, means service, responsibility, and impact. It’s about showing up consistently, even when it’s hard, and putting the needs of others before personal recognition. A leader listens, builds trust, and creates space for people to grow, while still holding themselves and others accountable.
Leadership also means being willing to make tough decisions, take ownership of mistakes, and lead by example. Ultimately, it’s not about the title you hold, but the positive change you create and the way people are better because you were willing to step up and serve.
We now live in a digital world, what do you think schools need to do to represent themselves online in 2025–2026?
Institutions should highlight a sense of individuality for both the school and its students, showcasing diverse voices, achievements, and experiences. It’s also important to communicate a family-oriented atmosphere where students feel supported, connected, and valued. Additionally, schools should be transparent and accessible when it comes to affordability, resources, and opportunities, using digital platforms to build trust and relatability. A strong online presence should feel authentic, inclusive, and reflective of the community it serves.

Why do you think Watch The Yard is important to Black students and college culture?
It provides a platform that amplifies Black excellence, leadership, and tradition, allowing students to see themselves represented authentically. Watch The Yard also embodies the meaning of the Sankofa (Akofi) bird—reach one, teach one—by honoring the past while educating and empowering future generations. Through storytelling and visibility, it reinforces pride, unity, and cultural responsibility within Black college culture.
What do you plan on doing after graduation?
After graduation, I plan to pursue a master’s degree in Higher Education Leadership and also join the United States Army. My goal is to continue developing my leadership skills while serving my country and preparing for a long-term career centered on leadership, service, and student success.
We at Watch The Yard would like to commend Kanye J. Richards for his work as the student government president of Allen University.
