California’s First Black Female State Controller Malia Cohen Just Became a Soror of Alpha Kappa Alpha
Malia Cohen, the first Black woman ever elected California State Controller, has officially joined Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® as a member of the Delta Zeta Omega Chapter’s Fall 2025 line.
Cohen has spent her career championing fiscal transparency and responsible governance. Before becoming State Controller, she served on the California Board of Equalization and the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, where her leadership focused on community investment, economic equity, and oversight of public resources. Her election as Controller represented a historic milestone for California and for Black women in government.

The Delta Zeta Omega Chapter shared the following:
“Sister Malia Cohen is an accomplished financial steward and champion of accountability. Her leadership as California’s first Black Female State Controller exemplifies integrity, excellence, and service, values that align with our rich legacy of impactful women making a difference. Welcome, Sister Cohen. Your brilliance shines in every balance sheet and every act of service. You are a true powerhouse.”
Cohen is part of the chapter’s All-Star Fall 2025 line, a cohort that includes three other distinguished women:
London Breed — Former Mayor of San Francisco and the first Black woman ever elected to the office. Breed is widely known for her community-centered leadership and advocacy for housing, public safety, and equity throughout the city.
Brittany Rae Nelson — A lead engineer, entrepreneur, and investor dedicated to expanding opportunities for women in STEM. Nelson’s innovations and mentorship efforts have made her a respected voice in technology and entrepreneurship.
Tamara Sisk — An accomplished interior designer and civic advocate committed to creating intentional, empowering spaces. Sisk is also a community leader who champions civic engagement and service-based initiatives.

Under the leadership of Chapter President Nile Taylor, Delta Zeta Omega celebrated this exceptional line as a reflection of the strength, diversity, and leadership at the heart of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®.
Watch The Yard congratulates Malia Cohen and the entire Fall 2025 line as they continue to advance the sorority’s mission of service, scholarship, and sisterhood.
