Alpha Kappa Alpha Just Chartered A New Chapter in Puerto Rico
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® has once again made history, this time by expanding its legacy and sisterhood to the shores of Puerto Rico. On Saturday, October 18, 2025, the sorority officially chartered its first chapter on the island. The new chapter, Alpha Delta Nu Omega, was revealed during a festive celebration in San Juan attended by family, friends, and sorority members who gathered to witness the historic moment.

The new chapter is the first Alpha Kappa Alpha chapter established in a Latin American region where Spanish is the dominant language, marking a powerful step forward in the organization’s global presence and cultural reach.
The charter members include 25 accomplished women working in fields including medicine, law, education, and business. Even before the chapter was officially formed, these women were already rooted in service. Over the past two years, they’ve been actively working with women, children, and families in Loíza, a community known for its deep Afro-Puerto Rican history and culture. From delivering toys to children in domestic violence shelters, to organizing health screenings for elders and providing career support to young people, their impact has already been significant.

“We are thrilled to bring Alpha Kappa Alpha to Puerto Rico,” said Carrie J. Clark, International Regional Director. “These women are dedicated to Puerto Rico and Loíza. They have already made a significant impact on women, children and families on the island and that work will continue and expand in the years to come.”
The chapter’s first official service project will focus on assembling Childhood Hunger Power Packs, also known as AKA CHIPP™️ weekend meals, for students in need, along with hurricane preparedness kits to support the local community during natural disasters. “We are so grateful for the generosity of JetBlue Airways Corporation to partner with us as we undertake this journey of service to communities in need in Puerto Rico,” said Clark. “This will be a strong start for our sisters as they keep ‘Soaring to Greater Heights of Service and Sisterhood,’ which is our program initiative under our International President and CEO Danette Anthony Reed,” she added.

Alpha Kappa Alpha was founded in 1908 on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. as the first sorority established by African American college women. Today, it boasts more than 380,000 members across 14 countries and territories now including Puerto Rico. The organization has a long-standing tradition of global impact which has led to recent initiatives like building schools in South Africa, and engaging in anti-poverty work across Sub-Saharan Africa. Its International Region most recently completed a week of intensive service in Liberia focused on underserved women and children.
