DC High School Students Remake Gambino’s ‘This Is America’ To Highlight Issues Facing Black Community
Question: What happens when members of the Divine Nine family who all teach at the same school do a remake of Childish Gambino’s “This is America” with their student? Answer: One amazing black history lesson for scholars at National Collegiate Prep in Washington, DC.
Honors history teacher, Giani Clarkson, a 2001 initiate of the Beta Phi Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha, teamed up with D9 staff members and students to create their own rendition of Childish Gambino’s ‘This is America” music video to highlight issues facing black America.
“Everyday I try my best to push my practice as a teacher. Today I had the best time challenging my scholars in recreating “THIS IS AMERICA!” I am so proud of my scholars and staff that helped out,”Clarkson stated.
“We decided to combine Social Studies with STEM. This was an amazing exploration of what makes being Black in America truly a journey, a struggle, but highlighted with success and still hills to climb”
