Gospel Legend Fred Hammond Inducted as Honorary Member of Phi Beta Sigma

Today, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. honored Grammy-winning gospel music pioneer Fred Hammond with Honorary Membership during its 2025 International Conclave in Tampa, Florida. The induction recognizes Hammond’s decades of musical innovation and unwavering commitment to faith-based service in Black communities.

With a career spanning over 40 years, Fred Hammond has shaped the sound of modern gospel music. As a founding member of the group Commissioned and later as a solo artist, Hammond helped pioneer the urban praise and worship movement—merging traditional gospel with contemporary R&B and hip-hop elements. His catalog includes classic albums like Pages of LifeSpirit of David, and Purpose By Design, each rooted in spiritual depth and cultural relevance.

Beyond the stage, Hammond’s ministry work has extended into community outreach, mentorship, and support for underserved youth and families. His legacy is not only musical, but deeply spiritual and communal.

Fred Hammond now stands among an elite group of 2025 honorary inductees, including civil rights leader Dr. Howard Fuller; hip-hop icon Edward “Special Ed” Archer; actor and singer Leon Robinson; former NFL player and academic Dr. George Koonce; Southern University Chancellor Dr. John K. Pierre; fashion entrepreneur Dave “UNK” Huie; and financial freedom advocate Dr. DeForest B. Soaries, Jr.

His induction into Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. is a celebration of a life devoted to music, ministry, and the elevation of Black communities through purpose and praise.
