Dr. DeForest B. Soaries, Jr. Inducted as an Honorary Member of Phi Beta Sigma

Today, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. inducted pastor, public servant, and financial empowerment leader, Dr. DeForest B. Soaries, Jr., as an Honorary Member during the 2025 International Conclave in Tampa, Florida. His induction highlights a career built on faith, policy, and economic liberation.

Dr. Soaries is widely recognized as the founder of the dfree® Financial Freedom Movement, a national initiative helping individuals and communities, particularly in underserved areas, achieve debt-free living and long-term financial stability. With a focus on practical strategies rooted in empowerment, dfree® has become a blueprint for economic resilience in the Black community.

His leadership spans both ministry and government. He served as New Jersey’s Secretary of State from 1999 to 2002, becoming the first African American male to hold that position. He was also appointed by President George W. Bush to chair the federal Election Assistance Commission following the 2000 election.

As senior pastor of First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens in Somerset, New Jersey, Dr. Soaries has blended theology and public service, mentoring thousands through faith-based and financial literacy programs that emphasize self-reliance and community strength.

“We’re excited to welcome this class of honorary members to the Phi Beta Sigma Brotherhood,” said Chris V. Rey, J.D., International President of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. “Their professional achievements and community service engagement make them perfect candidates for Honorary Membership.”

Dr. Soaries joins a distinguished 2025 honorary line that includes civil rights leader Dr. Howard Fuller; hip-hop icon Edward “Special Ed” Archer; actor and singer Leon Robinson; gospel legend Fred Hammond; former NFL player and academic Dr. George Koonce; fashion entrepreneur Dave “UNK” Huie; and Southern University Chancellor Dr. John K.
