Omega Psi Phi’s Congressman Clyburn to Receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom

The White House announced today that Representative James “Jim” Clyburn, a key figure in the Democratic Party, former Assistant Democratic Leader and Majority Whip in the United States House of Representatives and a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., will be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Joe Biden. The White House announced the honor, highlighting Clyburn’s transformative impact on the lives of millions of Americans and his significant contributions to the nation.

“Words cannot express the profound honor and gratitude I feel upon receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom. This recognition is not only a testament to my work, but also to the countless individuals who have supported my journey; the giants who fought alongside me for justice, equity, and the pursuit of progress; and the support of my loving family,” said Congressman Clyburn.

Through three decades in the House, Representative Clyburn has been a pivotal figure in shaping American policy and legislation. Known for his advocacy for civil rights, historical preservation, healthcare reform, and economic equity, Clyburn’s work has left an indelible mark on the fabric of American society. “Through his dedication and leadership, Representative Clyburn has created a freer country for all Americans,” the White House stated.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the nation’s highest civilian honor, bestowed upon individuals who have made exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, as well as those who have advanced world peace or significantly impacted societal, public, or private endeavors.

Clyburn is one of nineteen recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom this year, representing a diverse array of fields and accomplishments. These recipients, according to the White House, are the pinnacle of leadership, embodying the values of community, hard work, and service. Their collective efforts have shaped America and inspired generations.

The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place at the White House on May 3, 2024. The event will honor not only Representative Clyburn but also the other distinguished recipients whose contributions have enriched the nation and the world.
