Leadership Highlight: Wiley University Student Government President Maricus Browder Jr

In an effort to highlight the people who are leading colleges and universities across the nation, we at Watch The Yard reached out to Wiley University and did an interview with Maricus Browder Jr, the 2024-2025 Student Government Association president.

The position of SGA president is a highly respected role, and there is a special pride in being elected by peers to lead. Maricus, who is majoring in Mass Communication, is from Springhill and is a proud Spring 23 initiate of Kappa Alpha Psi.

We interviewed Maricus and talked to him about his position, goals, future, and what it means to hold this type of leadership position in 2024-2025.

What is the biggest thing you’ve learned as an SGA president so far?

One of the biggest things I’ve learned so far is the importance of listening to everyone in the school community. It’s not just about making decisions, but making sure that the voices of all students whether they are involved in student government or not are heard. Being a leader means representing all different groups and understanding their needs and concerns.

What made you decide to attend Wiley University for undergrad?

I decided to attend Wiley University for my undergrad because of the strong sense of community and the opportunities for personal growth. When I visited the campus, I could tell that the students and faculty really care about each other. I also liked how the university offers a lot of support for students, both academically and personally. The smaller class sizes made me feel like I could get the attention I needed from professors, and I knew I’d have the chance to be more involved in activities and leadership roles. It felt like a place where I could not only get a good education but also grow as a person and make a real impact.

How has Wiley University molded you into the person you are today?

Wiley University has really helped shape me into a more confident and responsible person. The professors and staff have always been supportive, pushing me to challenge myself and step out of my comfort zone. Through my classes, I’ve learned to think critically and solve problems in new ways. Being involved in activities like student government has taught me leadership skills, how to work with different people, and how to listen to others’ ideas. Overall, this school has helped me grow in ways I never expected and has made me more prepared for the future.

What specific initiatives have you headed up this year (or are planning), and how do you think they will improve the school and surrounding community?

We’re planning to create a mentorship program where upperclassmen can help guide underclassmen with their studies and life at college. This will create a supportive network for students and help everyone succeed, both academically and personally.

I believe all these initiatives will improve the school by making it more inclusive, environmentally conscious, and connected to the community.

How is your SGA administration/school currently working on attending to the mental health of students?

Our SGA is really focused on helping students with their mental health this year. We know that college can be stressful, so we’re working on a few things to make sure everyone feels supported. One thing we’re doing is partnering with the counseling center to host mental health awareness events, like workshops and talks about stress management, mindfulness, and how to ask for help when you need it.

What does leadership mean to you?

To me, leadership means helping and guiding others while also listening to their ideas and needs. It’s about setting a good example, being responsible, and working together as a team. A good leader doesn’t just tell people what to do; they support and encourage everyone to do their best. Leadership also means being fair and making decisions that help the whole group, not just yourself. It’s about making a positive impact and helping others grow along the way.

We now live in a digital world, what do you think schools need to do to represent themselves online in 2025?

In 2025, I think schools need to have a strong online presence that shows what they’re all about and connects with students, parents, and the community. Schools should have up-to-date websites that are easy to navigate, with important information like event schedules, school news, and resources for students and parents.

They should also be active on social media, sharing updates, student achievements, and upcoming events. Social media can help create a sense of community, even for people who aren’t on campus. It also lets schools highlight student voices and accomplishments, making them feel proud and involved.

Why do you think Watch The Yard is important to Black students and college culture?

I think Watch The Yard is really important to Black students and college culture because it gives a platform to celebrate and showcase the unique experiences, achievements, and contributions of Black students on campuses. It highlights Black Greek life, student organizations, events, and everything that makes Black college culture special.

It also helps create a sense of community and pride among Black students. Seeing positive stories and representations of Black students can inspire others to get involved and feel more connected to their own culture. Watch The Yard helps make sure Black voices are heard and valued, and it also brings attention to issues that matter to Black students, making it a space for support, unity, and empowerment.

What do you plan on doing after graduation?

After graduation, I plan ongoing to graduate school to continue my studies in higher education. I want to take what I’ve learned at college and use it to make a positive impact, whether that’s through helping others, leading projects, or finding ways to solve problems. I also want to keep growing as a person by gaining new experiences and learning more every day. My main goal is to do something that I enjoy and that can help make the world a better place in some way.

We at Watch The Yard would like to commend Maricus Browder Jr for his work as the SGA president of Wiley University.
