Black Journalism Pioneer Louis Lautier Was A Member Of Kappa Alpha Psi
Were you aware that the first African American journalism admitted to the White House Correspondents’ Association was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi? Louis Lautier pledged the Washington (DC) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
Louis Lautier was born in New Iberia, Louisiana in 1897 and raised in New Orleans, Louisana. He attended Straight College (which would later be changed into Dillard University) in New Orleans. He also studied at Howard University in Washington, DC. His first real job in the field was as a legal stenographer for the U.S. Department of Justice.
Lautier became the first African American journalist admitted to the Whitehouse Correspondent’s Association in 1951, and to the National Press Club in 1955. He retired in 1961 to work for the chairman of the Republican National Committee.
