Howard University Iotas Release Statement Opposing President Trump’s ‘Big Beautiful Bill’

The brothers of the Alpha Tau Chapter of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. at Howard University are taking a public stand against President Trump’s proposed “One Big Beautiful Bill.” In a formal statement released July 2nd on their official chapter social media channels, the chapter expressed deep concern about the legislation as it awaits a final vote from the House of Representatives. The Iotas warn that the bill threatens vulnerable communities and represents a troubling departure from principles of justice, equity, and responsible governance that they hold as Men of Iota.

The bill has been criticized by the Howard Iotas for placing a disproportionate burden on marginalized communities, diverting resources from critical domestic needs like affordable housing, mental health services, education, and economic opportunity. The chapter’s statement rejects the notion that mass surveillance, harsh detention policies, or border militarization represent true national strength. Instead, they call for compassion, evidence-based policy, and an unwavering commitment to human dignity.

“As Men of Iota, we reaffirm our commitment to social justice and the empowerment of our communities,” the chapter declared, urging citizens—especially young Black and Brown leaders—to stay informed, speak out, and take action against legislation that threatens freedom and fairness.

The Alpha Tau Chapter’s call to action encourages supporters to read and share their statement, contact their representatives, and join local organizing efforts. Their message is clear: “We’re not just speaking out — we’re standing up. Be loud. Be present. Be the difference.”

Founded in the spirit of service and advocacy, Iota Phi Theta has long encouraged its members to engage with issues that impact their communities. The Howard Iotas’ statement on the “One Big Beautiful Bill” reflects their commitment to participating in national conversations and promoting a vision of America that strives to be equitable, ambitious, and just.
