Maryland State Delegate Stephanie Smith Joins Delta Sigma Theta’s Baltimore Alumnae Chapter

Maryland State Delegate Stephanie M. Smith has joined Delta Sigma Theta’s Baltimore Alumnae Chapter as a member of The Chosen 86. Smith represents Baltimore City’s 45th District in the Maryland House of Delegates, where she works on education, economic development, and equity-focused policy.

Smith serves on the House Appropriations Committee and chairs the Education and Economic Development Subcommittee. She also sits on the Capital Subcommittee and was appointed Parliamentarian of the Maryland House of Delegates in 2023. A first-generation college graduate, she has passed more than three dozen laws addressing public safety, economic justice, healthcare, environmental sustainability, and education equity.

Outside of the legislature, Smith is an Assistant Director for the Baltimore Department of Planning, overseeing equity planning, sustainability, food policy, communications, and data analysis. Her background also includes federal policy work as a Capitol Hill staffer and lobbyist focused on public health, voting rights, affordable housing, and environmental justice. Active in the Baltimore community, she serves on the boards of the Maryland School for the Blind, Baltimore Centerstage, and the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore. She is a graduate of Hampton University, the University of Delaware, and Howard University School of Law.

Reflecting on her journey into Delta Sigma Theta, Smith shared: “I’ve long admired the ongoing impact of Delta Sigma Theta, and I’m so excited to join the ranks of this illustrious sisterhood! As a legislator in the Maryland General Assembly, Delta provided me with strategic policy guidance that helped secure the passage of the CROWN Act successfully. From voting rights to education policy, I can always count on Deltas taking an active interest in the welfare of our nation and our local Baltimore community.”

She continued: “The Chosen 86 was diligently prepared by our Baltimore Alumnae Chapter leadership to truly understand the values our Founders stood upon. Delta was established in the wake of extraordinary social challenges, and our members are standing in the gap for communities reeling from present-day social instability. As an initiate of the Baltimore Alumnae Chapter, I’m humbled to join a storied history of Delta excellence. Founder Vashti Turley Murphy is a Charter Member, and extraordinary Baltimore Alumnae Chapter changemakers continue to make their mark.”

As a member of The Chosen 86, Delegate Stephanie Smith brings her commitment to service, policy leadership, and community empowerment into the sisterhood of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
