Black Greekdom Mourns the Passing of Delta Sigma Theta’s 25th National President, Dr. Paulette C. Walker

Black Greekdom is currently mourning the loss of a towering figure in education, leadership, and sisterhood, Dr. Paulette C. Walker, the 25th National President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. The sorority officially announced her passing on October 10, 2025.

In a heartfelt statement, Delta Sigma Theta reflected on her enduring legacy: “Initiated through the Epsilon Epsilon Chapter at Michigan State University in October 1966, Dr. Walker’s more than five decades of service reflected an unwavering devotion to Delta’s ideals of sisterhood, scholarship, service, and social action. A visionary and steadfast leader, she earned the admiration and respect of sorors across generations for her wisdom, grace, and resolute commitment to uplifting others.”

Dr. Walker served as National President of Delta Sigma Theta from 2013 to 2017, leading the sorority with clarity, compassion, and an unshakable commitment to social change. Her tenure reflected her lifelong mission: to advance education, empower women, and serve the Black community with purpose and integrity.

Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Dr. Walker dedicated her life to the advancement of education and equity. She earned her Bachelor of Science in mathematics education from Michigan State University, followed by a Master of Arts in guidance and counseling and a Doctor of Education in administration and supervision, both from the University of Michigan.

According to Savannah Morning News, her professional journey spanned roles as a teacher, school counselor, director of counseling, assistant principal, and district-level supervisor of state and federal programs. Before retiring in 2011, she served as the Director of Undergraduate Programs and Internships at the University of South Florida’s College of Education. She also co-authored the book We Can Have Better Urban Schools, a call to action for those committed to improving education in underserved communities.

Beyond her academic influence, Dr. Walker was a sought-after speaker, researcher, and mentor. Her honors include the Ronald McNair Scholars Role Model Mentor Award, the President’s Affirmative Action Award at USF, and recognition as an Honorary Citizen of the State of Georgia.

Delta’s tribute continued: “Dr. Walker’s guiding motto, ‘No one can make you feel inferior without your consent,’ encapsulated the confidence and conviction she inspired in others. She encouraged all to recognize and share their unique gifts with the world, and she lived this truth daily through her leadership, faith, and love for Delta.”

Dr. Walker’s leadership left a profound imprint on Delta Sigma Theta and our broader community.

As we honor the life of Dr. Paulette C. Walker, we acknowledge a profound loss, but we also celebrate a legacy rooted in excellence, service, and the enduring power of Black sisterhood. Her light will continue to shine through the lives she touched and the mission she lived so boldly.

We at Watch The Yard ask that you keep her family, friends and sorority sisters in your thoughts and prayers.
