Delta Sigma Theta’s Dorcey Applyrs Becomes First Black Mayor of Albany, New York

In a historic victory that redefines the political landscape of Albany, New York, Dr. Dorcey Applyrs has been elected the city’s first Black mayor.

A proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Applyrs defeated Republican Rocco Pezzulo on Tuesday night, securing a four-year term and becoming the first Black person ever elected to lead the city. Her win marks a pivotal shift in a city that has seen only six mayors since 1942.

Applyrs, currently serving as Albany’s chief city auditor, will take office in January, succeeding Democrat Kathy Sheehan, who has held the mayoral seat for the past 12 years. Her election also signals the beginning of a new chapter in Albany politics—one shaped by vision, inclusion, and community-rooted leadership.

“This is our moment. We’ve earned this moment and it is such an amazing moment,” Applyrs said in her victory speech. “I’m here because others believed, pushed and kept going, even when it was extremely hard.”

Applyrs’ political ascent has been swift. She began her career in public service working on HIV initiatives along Clinton Avenue, later serving two terms on the Albany Common Council. In 2020, she became the city’s auditor. After launching her mayoral bid in November 2023, she emerged victorious in a competitive four-way Democratic primary in June 2025.

A Spring 2002 initiate of the Epsilon Alpha Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Dr. Applyrs remains a dedicated member of the Albany (NY) Alumnae Chapter. In a congratulatory Instagram post, her chapter stated, “Soror Applyrs continues to uplift and serve as a dedicated member of the Albany (NY) Alumnae Chapter, and her work stands as a powerful reflection of our sisterhood’s legacy.”

Applyrs holds a doctorate in public health from the University at Albany and is the mother of two. Her leadership journey—fueled by service, purpose, and sisterhood—offers a powerful reminder of what is possible when Black women lead with integrity and vision.
