Delta Sigma Theta Soror Candi Mundon King Appointed Secretary of the Commonwealth of Virginia
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will be represented at the highest levels of Virginia state government.
Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger has announced the appointment of Candi Mundon King, a proud Delta Sigma Theta soror, to serve as Secretary of the Commonwealth of Virginia, a key role responsible for ensuring accessibility, responsiveness, and effective constituent services within the Office of the Governor.
Mundon King has represented Virginia’s 23rd District in the House of Delegates since 2021 and made history as the first Black woman to chair the House Committee on Counties, Cities, and Towns. Her leadership has consistently reflected Delta Sigma Theta’s legacy of public service, advocacy, and social action.

During her tenure in the General Assembly, Mundon King has championed legislation that secured pay raises for teachers, strengthened protections for victims of human trafficking, expanded paid sick leave for home health care workers, and safeguarded renters from unauthorized home access. She also authored the historic Virginia MOMnibus, which transformed maternal health outcomes across the Commonwealth, and founded both the Sickle Cell Caucus and the Black Maternal Health Caucus.
Prior to her elected service, Mundon King worked in philanthropy and global advocacy, holding leadership roles at CARE where she helped advance the Global Food Security Act, and at the Gates Foundation. She began her career in public policy as a legislative assistant advocating for Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
A graduate of Norfolk State University, Mundon King pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.’s Portsmouth Alumnae Chapter in Spring 2006. Born and raised in Portsmouth, Virginia, she now resides in Dumfries with her family and remains deeply engaged in community service throughout the Commonwealth.

As she prepares to assume this role, Soror Mundon King has reaffirmed her commitment to ensuring government works effectively for every Virginian.
Watch The Yard congratulates Delta Sigma Theta soror Candi Mundon King on this historic appointment.
