Virginia State University Receives Historic 50 Million Dollar Gift from MacKenzie Scott
It was announced today that philanthropist MacKenzie Scott has made a $50 million donation to Virginia State University, marking the largest single donor gift in the university’s 143-year history. This is Scott’s second major gift to the institution in just five years, bringing her total contribution to an astounding 80 million dollars.
This is not just a donation. It is a powerful affirmation of VSU’s legacy, leadership, and its role as a national engine for educational equity.
“Ms. Scott’s generosity and trust in our mission will change the trajectory of Virginia State University for generations to come,” said VSU President Dr. Makola M. Abdullah in the announcement on VSU’s website. “Her investment allows us to continue to build upon our legacy of excellence and expand our reach to more students who deserve access to a world-class education.”
The unrestricted gift will be used to advance the goals outlined in VSU’s strategic plan, focusing on academic excellence, innovation, and holistic student success. That includes leadership development, hands-on learning, and preparing students for real-world impact.

Dr. Willis Walter, Interim Vice President for External Relations, framed the moment as a call to action.
“This gift speaks to the confidence Ms. Scott has in the extraordinary work happening at Virginia State University,” Walter said. “Her continued partnership highlights how philanthropy can serve as a powerful catalyst for change.”
Scott’s first gift to VSU came in 2020, a 30 million dollar contribution as part of her nationwide effort to uplift Historically Black Colleges and Universities. This new 50 million dollar gift solidifies her commitment to institutions that not only serve, but transform, Black communities.
“MacKenzie Scott’s support reminds us that when you invest in Virginia State University, you are investing in the next generation of leaders, innovators, and change-makers,” said Dr. Abdullah. “This gift will help ensure that Greater continues to Happen Here.”
