MacKenzie Scott Donates $63 Million to Morgan State, Bringing Her Total Gift to The University to $103 Million
In a historic show of support, philanthropist MacKenzie Scott has awarded Morgan State University a $63 million unrestricted gift, her second transformative donation to the university in less than five years. With this latest contribution, Scott has now given a total of $103 million to Morgan, making it one of the most significant private gifts ever received by an HBCU.
“Morgan is on an extraordinary journey,” said University President David K. Wilson. “This investment will allow us to accelerate that momentum, breaking barriers, advancing equity, and fulfilling our vision to become one of the top public research universities in the country—without losing our soul.”
According to a press release from Morgan, the $63 million gift will help grow the school’s endowment, expand research capacity, and enhance student success initiatives. Unlike most major donations, Scott’s contributions are unrestricted, giving the university the freedom to invest where it matters most.
Her first donation in 2020 of $40 million was the largest individual gift in Morgan’s history at the time and helped seed the school’s first-ever unrestricted endowment. Since then, the university has launched major centers focused on urban health, educational equity, cybersecurity, and more. Scott’s continued support underscores national confidence in Morgan’s leadership, financial stewardship, and mission.
With record-breaking enrollment growth and the announcement of a planned HBCU-based M.D. medical school, Morgan is quickly solidifying its role as one of the most forward-moving and impactful institutions in Black higher education.
