Wilberforce University to Host Inaugural Isla HBCU Classic Featuring Fisk, Wilberforce, and Greenville Gymnastics Teams

Wilberforce University is set to host the inaugural Isla HBCU Classic, a three-day celebration of athletic excellence and HBCU culture, from February 14-16, 2025. The event, organized by the Isla Foundation in partnership with Brown Girls Do Gymnastics and Wilberforce University’s Women’s Gymnastics booster club, aims to highlight diversity and inclusion within gymnastics and cheerleading.
The Isla HBCU Classic will feature a range of events, including a Divine 9 Step Show and Cheerleading and Dance Exhibition on February 14, a Resource Fair and Alumni Brunch on February 15, and the Isla Invitational and Collegiate Gymnastics Competition on February 16. The competition will bring together Fisk University, Wilberforce University, and Greenville University, with club-level gymnasts traveling from Atlanta and Detroit to participate.
Fisk University, known for launching the first HBCU intercollegiate women’s artistic gymnastics team in 2022, will be among the key contenders. Wilberforce University, which plans to debut its gymnastics program officially in 2026, has accelerated its plans to compete in 2025. Greenville University, an NCAA gymnastics program, will also participate, showing their support for the HBCU gymnastics movement.

Dr. Morgan Byrd, Head Coach of Wilberforce University Gymnastics, emphasized the significance of the event, stating that it represents a celebration of resilience, diversity, and talent within the community. “This event will inspire young athletes to dream big and break barriers,” said Byrd.
