Exclusive: President Biden to Speak at Howard University’s Commencement Ceremony

Watch The Yard has learned exclusively from the the White House that President Biden will speak at Howard University’s commencement ceremony on May 13th.

The 155th Commencement Convocation on the main campus of Howard University’s Upper Quadrangle at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 13, 2023.

According to the White House, President Biden’s visit to Howard comes on the heels of a nearly $6 billion cumulative investment through the Department of Education to support HBCUs since 2021.

This also follows the the Biden-Harris Administration’s increased involvement with HBCUs including the re-establishment of the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity for HBCUs where Howard University graduate Taraji P. Henson serves as Board member.

On top of President Biden speaking at Vice President Kamala Harris’ alma mater, Howard University, multiple cabinet members in the Biden-Harris Administration will also travel to HBCU commencements across the country including:

  • Housing Secretary Marcia Fudge (Florida A&M University)
  • Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack (Alcorn State University)
  • Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin (Fayetteville State University)
  • Management & Budget Director Shalanda Young (Xavier University of Louisiana)

The Dig has reported that Howard University will present honorary degrees to Congressman James E. Clyburn; education benefactors Martha and Bruce A. Karsh; Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Keith Christopher Rowley, health sciences trailblazer A. Eugene Washington; and corporate director Benaree Pratt Wiley at the commencement.
