Four HBCUs Join Forces to Launch eHBCU, Offering Online HBCU Degrees and Certificates

A new chapter in HBCU history has begun with the official launch of eHBCU.edu, a first-of-its-kind online platform that aims to bring the transformative experience of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to students around the world. This digital initiative, led by Delaware State University, Southern University and A&M College, Alabama State University, and Pensole Lewis College of Business & Design, is designed to break down barriers to higher education and extend the legacy of HBCUs far beyond traditional campus boundaries.
The launch of eHBCU.edu comes at a time when interest in HBCUs is on the rise. While enrollment at these storied institutions has nearly doubled in recent years, an estimated 6 million Black Americans have earned some college credits without completing a degree. eHBCU seeks to address this gap by offering flexible, high-quality programs that meet the needs of today’s diverse learners.
“At their core, HBCUs have always been about creating pathways to opportunity and producing leaders who drive change,” said Terry Jeffries, Assistant Vice President at Delaware State University and Executive Director of eHBCU. “Since 1837, these institutions have been beacons of hope. With eHBCU, we are carrying that tradition into the digital future—ensuring the next generation can access this legacy of excellence, no matter where they live.”

The eHBCU platform offers a robust selection of degree and certificate programs tailored for working adults, career changers, and lifelong learners. The coursework is designed to uphold the academic rigor and culturally rich teaching approaches that have defined HBCUs for nearly two centuries. Beyond academics, eHBCU promises students access to mentorship from HBCU alumni and faculty, as well as a vibrant virtual community that fosters networking, connection, and lifelong relationships.
In addition to its educational offerings, the initiative has garnered support from major partners including Blue Meridian and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. These partnerships aim to fuel educational access and support professional development, ensuring that students are equipped with the digital skills necessary to thrive in a modern workforce.

The launch of eHBCU reflects the ongoing evolution of HBCUs as they continue to innovate while honoring their historic mission. By bringing the excellence, culture, and community of HBCUs into the digital age, the consortium is working to empower students across the globe and extend the impact of these vital institutions.
