Alpha Phi Alpha Brother Marvin B. Figueroa Appointed Transition Co-Chair by Virginia Governor-Elect Abigail Spanberger

Virginia Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger has announced her transition leadership team, selecting a group of experienced public servants to help build the foundation for her incoming administration. Among those tapped to lead the effort is Marvin B. Figueroa, a veteran policy strategist and brother of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., who will serve as Co-Chair of Spanberger’s “United for Virginia’s Future” transition team.

Spanberger said the team will translate her campaign promises into a governing agenda focused on lowering costs for families, strengthening the economy, and expanding opportunity. “Virginians have spoken,” she said. “They are ready for pragmatic and principled leadership that puts Virginia first. My transition team will use this moment to bring us together and build a stronger, safer, and more affordable future for all Virginians.”

Figueroa, a Spring 2005 initiate of the Kappa Theta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha at Vanderbilt, currently serves as a Vice President in BGR Group’s Health and Life Sciences Practice, where he advises organizations on healthcare policy and government decision-making. He previously served as Chief of Staff to U.S. Senator Laphonza Butler and was appointed by President Biden as Director of Intergovernmental and External Affairs at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, overseeing more than 60 staff across 10 regional offices.

In Virginia, he played a central role in expanding Medicaid as Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Resources under Governor Ralph Northam, helping extend healthcare access to more than 500,000 residents. His earlier work as a senior policy advisor to U.S. Senator Mark Warner included shaping the bipartisan CHRONIC Care Act of 2017.

Originally from La Ceiba, Honduras, Figueroa is a POSSE Foundation Scholar, a graduate of Vanderbilt University and Harvard University, and an alumnus of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute. He is also a Distinguished Fellow and Senior Lecturer, Meharry Medical College School of Global Health.

As Co-Chair, Figueroa will help guide the span from campaign to governance, shaping the early direction of the Spanberger administration as it prepares to take office.
