Southern University Clears Alpha Phi Alpha Chapter of Hazing Allegations, Lifts Cease-and-Desist Order

Southern University has cleared its Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. chapter of hazing allegations and lifted a cease-and-desist order that had suspended all fraternity activities during the fall semester, according to WAFB.

According to WAFB, in a letter sent Tuesday to the president of the Beta Sigma Chapter, Southern University’s Office of Student Leadership and Engagement stated that the fraternity was not found to be in violation of the Student Code of Conduct or Greek Life policies. The order was lifted effective immediately.

The cease-and-desist order had been issued in October and remained in place during Homecoming week, prohibiting members from wearing paraphernalia, hosting events, or appearing as an identifiable group.

The investigation began after allegations surfaced involving the chapter’s “Miss Black and Gold” pageant. Documents obtained by the WAFB I-TEAM alleged that pageant participants were asked to perform exercises and recite poems and fraternity-related information during an off-campus meeting earlier this fall.

After a review, the university concluded the chapter did not violate campus or Greek Life policies and has allowed the fraternity to resume normal operations.
