Alpha Phi Alpha Commits $600,000 to Support HBCUs and Majority Minority Institutions

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. has announced a significant new investment in higher education, earmarking $600,000 in giving and scholarships for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Majority Minority institutions across all five of its regions. This commitment comes in addition to recent contributions the fraternity has made to institutions such as Tuskegee University and Paine College, strengthening Alpha Phi Alpha’s historic legacy of supporting Black educational institutions.

The funding plan, approved by the fraternity’s General Board of Directors in October, directs each region to award seven institutions $17,000 each, with the selected schools announced on regional social media platforms. In its press release, the fraternity emphasized that this level of targeted giving is especially crucial at a time when many HBCUs and Minority-Serving Institutions are facing financial strain, reductions in federal support, and the nationwide rollback of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives.

“Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is committed to its mission of promoting academic excellence as well as providing support for HBCUs and educational opportunities for African Americans as well as other disenfranchised people,” said General President Lucien J. Metellus, Jr. “These contributions are aimed at helping to somewhat offset the loss of educational support for disenfranchised students due to cuts in federal funding at these institutions as well as due to the dismantling of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion opportunities in higher education.”

Several institutions across the country and beyond have already been named as awardees. Among them are Central State University, The University of the Bahamas US Foundation Inc., Barber Scotia College, Wilberforce University, Bluefield State University, UNCF – Northern California, Charles Drew University, Morgan State University, The University Foundation at Sacramento, and the Jackson State National Alumni Association.

Through this initiative, Alpha Phi Alpha continues to reinforce its role as a champion for educational access, institutional stability, and the advancement of Black scholars and communities nationwide.
