San Francisco’s First Black Woman Mayor London Breed Just Became a Soror of Alpha Kappa Alpha

London Nicole Breed, who made history as the 45th mayor of San Francisco, just became a soror of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® as part of the Delta Zeta Omega Chapter’s Fall 2025 line. Breed joins three other distinguished women in a moment the chapter is celebrating as a powerful addition to its legacy of leadership, service, and excellence.

Breed, who served as mayor from 2018 to 2025, was the first Black woman ever elected to the position. She first assumed the mayoral role as acting mayor in 2017 following the passing of Mayor Ed Lee, before later winning the 2018 special election and serving two full terms.Breed is the first Black woman, second black person after Willie Brown, and second woman after Dianne Feinstein to be elected mayor of San Francisco

In announcing her induction, the Delta Zeta Omega Chapter honored her trailblazing legacy, stating:

“Sister London is the first and only Black Female Mayor of San Francisco. Her unwavering commitment to advocacy, equity, and empowerment perfectly reflects the mission of Service to All Mankind. We celebrate Sister London for using her platform to uplift others and shape a brighter future for our communities.”

Breed joins three exceptional women on the Fall 2025 line:

Brittany Rae Nelson — A lead engineer, entrepreneur, and investor expanding opportunities for women in STEM through innovation and mentorship.

Malia Cohen — California’s first Black woman State Controller, recognized for her leadership in fiscal transparency, public service, and economic equity.

Tamara Sisk — A respected interior designer and community advocate committed to creating uplifting, intentional spaces and advancing civic engagement.

Chapter President Nile Taylor celebrated the induction, stating that the achievements and commitment of these four women reflect the core values of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®. “Their leadership enriches our chapter, our communities, and the global sisterhood of Alpha Kappa Alpha,” she said.
