Born in 1917 in Newport News, Virginia, Fitzgerald rose from a difficult childhood to international stardom after winning an amateur night competition at Harlem’s Apollo Theater as a teenager. Known as “The First Lady of Song,” the “Queen of Jazz,” and “Lady Ella,” she became famous for her crystalline tone, flawless diction, and the improvised scat singing that few performers could match.

As a young singer, Fitzgerald studied the recordings of artists like Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby, and the Boswell Sisters, and she so admired lead vocalist Connee Boswell that she worked to echo her phrasing. That devotion to craft carried her across six decades and nearly every corner of American popular music, from swing and bebop to her landmark songbook albums.

Over her career, Fitzgerald earned 13 Grammy Awards, the National Medal of Arts, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. Her 1960 induction into Alpha Kappa Alpha placed her among the distinguished women the sorority has recognized with honorary membership for outstanding achievement and cultural impact, a list that also includes Maya Angelou, Rosa Parks, and Coretta Scott King.

Founded in 1908 at Howard University, Alpha Kappa Alpha was the first Greek-letter organization established by Black college women, and it reserves honorary membership for women whose life’s work mirrors its values. Ella Fitzgerald, who died in 1996, remains one of its most beloved honorary members.
