Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorors at Ball State Help Raise Funds for Local High School While Serving Hundreds at Homecoming Game

When Burris High School in Muncie, Indiana celebrated its boys homecoming basketball game, members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. stepped in to serve the community while helping raise funds for the school.

Members of the Beta Phi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha served over 400 community members and helped raise more than $1,000 for local education during Burris High School’s Boys Homecoming Basketball Game while volunteering at the concession stand.

Seventeen volunteers, including eight chapter members, worked throughout the basketball game serving pretzels, popcorn, candy, drinks, and other concession items to attendees. The members created a welcoming environment for families and community members who came out to support the high school team during the homecoming celebration.

The concession stand operations generated over $1,000 in revenue, with all proceeds going directly to support Burris High School’s needs, programs, and activities. The fundraising effort shows how community partnerships, even small ones like these, can provide meaningful financial support for local educational institutions.

“Working the concession stand allowed us to connect with the community while supporting a great cause. Seeing the turnout and the impact we made was very special,” said Jayanna Pounds, Community Service Chair and Chaplain of Beta Phi Chapter. The volunteer experience allowed chapter members to engage directly with community members while contributing to the school’s financial goals.

The basketball game fundraiser represents part of the chapter’s ongoing commitment to supporting educational initiatives in the Muncie area. Through hands-on service opportunities like this, members of Alpha Kappa Alpha continue to strengthen ties between the university and local community institutions.
