Alpha Kappa Alpha Soror Lisa Blunt Rochester Elected Delaware’s First Female Senator
In a groundbreaking victory, Democratic Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester, an honorary member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., has been elected as Delaware’s first female senator. Blunt Rochester’s triumph came after defeating Republican candidate Eric Hansen and independent candidate Mike Katz, securing her place in history as the first woman to represent Delaware in the U.S. Senate.
During her moving election night speech, Blunt Rochester paid tribute to the trailblazing Black women who served in the Senate before her, honoring Ambassador Carol Moseley Braun, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Senator Laphonza Butler.
“As I prepare to step foot on that trail blazed by the three strong Black women senators who came before us — Ambassador Carol Moseley Braun, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Senator Laphonza Butler — I have a message to the young people who are standing up, speaking up, and giving your all for our country and the world,” NBC News quotes her stating. “I see you, I’m grateful for you and you’ve got next.”
Blunt Rochester was named an honorary member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. on the sorority’s Founders’ Day in 2023, on a line that included legendary singer Patti LaBelle, renowned gospel artist Erica Campbell, and Olympic track and field champion Allyson Felix.
This landmark victory not only cements Blunt Rochester’s legacy but also amplifies her message of resilience and inspiration for future generations.
