Alpha Kappa Alpha Dedicates New Monument at Howard University and Presents $1.9 Million Gift to Its Beloved Birthplace
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® marked a historic milestone last week with the dedication of the AKA Monument at Howard University and the presentation of a $1.9 million donation to its founding home. The dual celebration, held on September 24, 2025, honored the Sorority’s 117-year legacy while making a bold investment in the future of Howard University students.

The ceremony was led by International President & CEO Danette Anthony Reed under the Soaring to Greater Heights of Service & Sisterhood Administration, which has focused on honoring the Sorority’s history while driving transformative impact for generations to come.

The new monument, located in “The Valley” on Howard’s campus, was first conceived in 2023 and officially unveiled in 2025. More than a structure, the monument serves as a lasting tribute to Alpha Kappa Alpha’s founders and the global sisterhood that has grown from Howard’s soil. Funded through the generosity of members, it symbolizes the unity and collective strength of the Sorority.

“This monument is more than stone and inscription—it is a love letter to our founders, a beacon for our members, and an enduring promise to serve,” said International President & CEO Danette Anthony Reed. “As we soar to justice, we celebrate where our journey began while investing in the future of Howard University and the countless students who will follow in our footsteps.”
In addition to unveiling the monument, Alpha Kappa Alpha presented a $1,908,000 donation to Howard University, underscoring its continued commitment to advancing education, equity, and opportunity.
Together, the monument dedication and financial gift stand as a powerful reflection of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s mission: honoring the past, serving in the present, and preparing the way for the future.
