Omega Psi Phi’s Ben Crump to Represent Family of Trey Reed; Kappa Alpha Psi’s Colin Kaepernick to Fund Second Autopsy

Two powerful voices from Black greekdom, civil rights attorney Ben Crump a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and activist-athlete Colin Kaepernick a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., are standing in solidarity with the family of Demartravion “Trey” Reed, a 21-year-old Delta State University student whose tragic death has sparked national concern and calls for justice.

Trey Reed, described by loved ones as “full of promise and warmth,” was found hanging from a tree near campus last Monday. Within days, attorney Crump announced that his team had been retained to represent the Reed family.

Meanwhile, Colin Kaepernick is ensuring that the Reed family has the tools to pursue truth. Through his Know Your Rights Camp Autopsy Initiative, launched in 2022, Kaepernick will cover the full cost of a second, independent autopsy.

This initiative has become a vital resource for families seeking clarity in deaths occurring in police custody or under suspicious circumstances. The second autopsy will be conducted once the state medical examiner releases Reed’s body.

The Cleveland Police Department has handed their findings to the FBI, which stated it is open to a federal investigation should new evidence arise. The Mississippi state autopsy reportedly ruled out foul play, but Reed’s family and civil rights leaders aren’t satisfied with that conclusion.

As more eyes turn toward Cleveland, Mississippi, this Omega and Kappa are showing what it means to uplift community through action not just words.
