Leadership Highlight: Albany State University’s SGA President Samia Park

In an effort to highlight the people who are leading colleges and universities across the nation, we at Watch The Yard reached out to Albany State University and did an interview with Samia Park the 2022-2023 Student Government Association president.

The position of SGA president is a highly respected role and there is a special pride that one takes in being elected by their peers to lead. Park, who is majoring in Psychology & Health and Human Performance, is from Florence, South Carolina. She is a proud Spring 2022 initiate of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

We interviewed Samia Park, and talked to her about her position, goals, future and what it means to hold this type of leadership position in 2022-2023.

Read the full interview below.

What is the biggest thing you’ve learned as an SGA president so far?

I’ve learned how important structure and versatility is. The body follows the head so if the head isn’t structured then the body has nothing to follow. Therefore it is imperative to make sure everything that is done through SGA is in decency and in order. Throughout my reign I’ve been taught sometimes you have to put your gavel down and lead through the connection you create with your student body.

What made you decide to attend Albany State University for undergrad?

My senior year of high school, I only applied to HBCUs because I wanted to be around my people and those who share the same interests and background as me. I visited Albany State University, a month after graduation & the campus energy was unmatched and the track coach offered me a spot on the team on site and from there I knew this was the place I was going to call home for the next 4 years.

How has Albany State University molded you into the person you are today?

The Unsinkable Indestructible Albany State University has taught me how to float when I feel everything else around me is sinking. My university has given me a platform to develop my leadership & knowledge on a level that I never would have imagined which allowed me to grow into the person I am today.

What specific initiatives have you headed up this year (or are planning) and how do you think they will improve the school and surrounding community?

The Park Administration is currently trying to bring a Business Vault to campus to ensure students have proper wardrobe to wear when they are conducting professional business. Many college students do not have the money to purchase business clothes which could hinder them in the workplace.

How is your SGA administration/school currently working on attending to the mental health of students?

My administration has implemented Wellness days throughout the schools year which consisting of self care activities occurring throughout the day such as meditation sessions, massages, healthy eating demonstrations, health screenings and more. Our university has also increased the awareness of our Counseling and Accessibility department by offering on campus and virtual counseling sessions.

What does leadership mean to you?

Leadership is about overcoming obstacles and changing the dynamic for the people they are governing. A true leader knows not only how to lead but to follow as well.

We now live in a digital world, what do you think schools need to do to represent themselves online in 2022/2023?

I believe school should start partnerships with technology companies to ensure faculty, staff, and students are able to understand the importance and impact of technology. This would also be an opportunity for schools to ensure that everyone has a electronic device to use if the company is willing to donate their products.

Why do you think Watch The Yard is important to Black students and college culture?

Watch The Yard is important because it gives black students & HBCUs a platform to showcase themselves and the overall college culture. It allows us to display the HBCU College life on a bigger scale as well as offers networking opportunities to our students.

What do you plan on doing after graduation?

Upon graduation, I plan to attend law and medical school to obtain my joint JD/MD to become a Medical Attorney.

We at Watch The Yard would like to commend Samia Park for her work as the SGA president of Albany State University.
