What is the biggest thing you’ve learned as a student government president so far?

The biggest thing I’ve learned as SGA president is that real leadership is about follow-through and relationships. Listening to students, bringing the right people to the table, and holding systems accountable creates real change. Impact doesn’t come from the title—it comes from consistent, student-centered advocacy

What made you decide to attend University of Houston – Clear Lake for undergrad?

UHCL chose me. When I arrived home, I received an acceptance letter in the mail, and from that moment, it felt meant to be. Since orientation, I’ve enjoyed every experience and opportunity to learn. My classes continue to shape me into a change-making educator and student advocate.

How has University of Houston – Clear Lake molded you into the person you are today?

UHCL has shaped me into a confident leader, advocate, and future educator. Through meaningful leadership opportunities, hands-on learning, and supportive faculty, I’ve learned to use my voice with purpose. The UHCL community has challenged me to grow, serve others, and lead with empathy, integrity, and a commitment to student success.

What specific initiatives have you headed up this year (or are planning) and how do you think they will improve the school and surrounding community?

This year, I led Commuter Appreciation Week, dedicating an entire week to recognizing and supporting UHCL’s commuter students through intentional programming and engagement. I also headed the Annual President’s Luncheon, creating a space where the University President and campus vice presidents provided transparent updates to students and student organization leaders.  These initiatives strengthened communication, inclusivity, and community awareness across campus and beyond.

How is your student government administration/school currently working on attending to the mental health of students?

Our SGA administration prioritizes student mental health through intentional programming and collaboration. We host annual Domestic Violence Awareness programming to educate students on safety and warning signs. Additionally, we meet regularly with the Counseling and Mental Health Center to address student needs and resources. Our members also participate in summer trainings with campus counselors to better support peers during mental health crises.

What does leadership mean to you?

Leadership is more than a title—it’s about serving others and building the next group of leaders. It means listening, empowering, and guiding others so they can lead confidently after you. True leadership is measured by the positive impact you leave and the leaders you help grow.

We now live in a digital world, what do you think schools need to do to represent themselves online in 2025–2026?

In 2025–2026, schools must represent themselves online with clarity, transparency, and engagement. This means maintaining updated websites and social media, sharing authentic student and faculty stories, highlighting achievements, and providing easy access to resources.

Why do you think Watch The Yard is important to Black students and college culture?

Watch The Yard is important because it celebrates Black representation and excellence in college culture. I’m honored to be approved for an interview and appreciate seeing news from around the world, especially the energy and traditions of the D9s during their fall and spring lines. It fosters pride and community. As a Black leader, we are often overlooked or not celebrated in leadership positions, which makes platforms like Watch The Yard so important.

What do you plan on doing after graduation?

After graduation, I plan to become a full-time educator and pursue my master’s in Educational Leadership with a focus on social justice or Educational Law, mentoring students and advocating for equity in schools and communities

We at Watch The Yard would like to commend Zachary Sheriff for his work as the student government president of University of Houston – Clear Lake.
