Legendary Singer Minnie Riperton Was an Honorary Member of Zeta Phi Beta

Did you know that the legendary singer behind “Lovin’ You,” known for her unforgettable five-octave voice, was an honorary member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.? Her name was Minnie Riperton, and her music continues to move listeners decades after her passing.

Minnie Julia Riperton was born on November 8, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois. She began her career in the early 1960s as a member of the vocal group the Gems and signed with the legendary Chess Records, where she sang backing vocals for stars such as Etta James, Fontella Bass, and the Dells. In 1968, she became the lead vocalist for the psychedelic soul band Rotary Connection, showcasing the extraordinary range that would define her sound.

As the official pages of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. document, Riperton was inducted as an honorary member of the sorority in 1974, the same year she became a household name.

That year, Riperton released her breakthrough album Perfect Angel, co-produced by Stevie Wonder. The record featured “Lovin’ You,” an international blockbuster that soared to the top of the charts and remains one of the most beloved songs of its era. Her angelic voice, capable of reaching notes few singers could touch, set her apart as one of the most gifted vocalists soul music has ever known.

Riperton’s courage matched her artistry. After she was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a mastectomy in 1976, she went public with her diagnosis at a time when few were willing to speak openly about the disease. She became a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society and received the society’s Courage Award from President Jimmy Carter, using her platform to encourage other Black women to advocate for their own health.

Minnie Riperton died on July 12, 1979, in Los Angeles, at just 31 years old. Her legacy lives on through her timeless recordings and through her daughter, actress and comedian Maya Rudolph.
