Watch The Yard prides itself in being the premier location for step shows and the culture that surrounds stepping online. We have seen thousands and thousands of shows, both good and bad, and we feel like some of you out there are not being as creative as you can be when it comes to picking themes.
At the end of the day, what makes a good step show is the actual stepping, but one must also pay attention and pick a good theme if they want to keep up with the competition. That is why we have made a list of the “Top Five Most Played Out Step Show Themes” with the idea that you will push your step team to be more creative when it comes to planning your next step show.
Here is our list of the“Top Five Most Played Out Step Show Themes.” Let us know if we have missed any themes you think are super played out in the comment section below.

Dark Knight/ Joker Theme
Lets be real with ourselves for a moment. Every person on a campus with a sizable Greek population has seen at least two of these step shows within their four years of college. Some of the writers at Watch The Yard have even seen it been done by two different teams in one show. We get it, you like the Joker and there is that one guy on your team who dabbles in acting and wants to play him in a short video clip while you’re switching props on stage. The only problem is EVERYONE HAS SEEN IT ALREADY. Pick another superhero, there are thousands of others to choose from.
S.W.A.T. Theme
This is how the S.W.A.T. theme usually seems to happen. You and your team sign up for a step show, practice for weeks, get your steps together, and then one person five days before the step show is like, “Wait, we are forgetting something … we forgot to pick a theme!” Everyone huddles around after step practice and argues about what you can do last minute and eventually you decide on a S.W.A.T. theme. You put a mediocre storyline together about sending a Special Forces unit in to save the step show and because the costumes cost so much … you decide that you will just keep doing the show for the rest of your stepping career.
James Bond Theme
Basically the same scenario as the S.W.A.T. theme except one person in the chapter convinces everyone that you would all look really good in tuxedos. This theme is cool but it is over-used and you could probably save money by being more creative and using the step team’s costume funds on other aspects of the show. Tuxedos are expensive to rent and some of ya’ll need to worry about student loans … Sallie Mae don’t play.
Michael Jackson Themes
This is always a crowd pleaser. Its been done a lot but MJ will never fully be played out. If you decide to do this show, you need go all the way, you can’t just put on a cheap MJ costume, a sparkly glove, and have one person start the show by doing the moonwalk. Show the King of Pop some respect! If you decide to do this show we want to see good MJ related choreography, funny plays on his music, and at least one Thriller related step.
“Coming To America” Theme
We can’t lie, this theme is AMAZING and it is so AMAZING that lots of chapters have started to do it to the point that it’s starting to become a little overdone. This theme is kind of like the MJ theme, as long as you go hard with it you will be good but if you don’t, everyone will be disappointed because they know that you probably just copied a step show from another chapter you saw online.
EXCEPTION TO THE RULE: If you have a lot of steppers on your team from Africa, this show will always be a winner with the crowd.
