What is the biggest thing you’ve learned as a student government president so far?
Serving as SGA President has taught me the value of opportunity—often shaped by effort, timing, and intentional choice. This role has emphasized the importance of problem-solving not only for oneself, but for the broader community, fostering shared responsibility and progress. Because student needs cannot be fully understood without student voices, my administration has prioritized engagement by strengthening connections between faculty, staff, and students through SGA Town Halls across all five campuses.
What made you decide to attend Middle Georgia State University for undergrad?
I chose to attend Middle Georgia State University because it is Georgia’s flagship institution for aviation and the only university in the state offering a professional pilot degree. The availability of the HOPE Scholarship, which now covers 100% of tuition, made pursuing this path financially feasible. Given my career goal of becoming a pilot, the decision was a natural fit.
How has Middle Georgia State University molded you into the person you are today?
Middle Georgia State University has shaped me through access to meaningful resources and opportunities for both professional and leadership development. Through close interaction with faculty and administrators, I learned to value institutional knowledge, historical context, and collaborative decision-making. Serving as president of multiple organizations and working with the Center for Career and Leadership Development further instilled a business-minded approach to leadership that continues to guide my personal and professional growth.
What specific initiatives have you headed up this year (or are planning) and how do you think they will improve the school and surrounding community?
Marketing of the Student Government Association and creating a strategic planned aligned with the University’s initiatives!
What does leadership mean to you?
Leadership means continuing forward despite obstacles. It requires thoughtful risk management, perseverance, and the ability to adapt when plans change. A strong leader also knows how to follow, recognizing when to listen and learn. By innovating the path forward rather than simply walking it, leaders create sustainable success.
We now live in a digital world, what do you think schools need to do to represent themselves online in 2025–2026?
While word of mouth remains a powerful tool on campus, schools must leverage social media to reach broader audiences in 2025–2026. A strong digital presence requires understanding platform-specific engagement and maintaining consistent, strategic posting to remain visible and relevant in students’ online spaces.
Why do you think Watch The Yard is important to Black students and college culture?
Watch The Yard is important because it serves as a central platform for highlighting Black excellence, leadership, and institutional change within higher education. By showcasing HBCUs, Black Greek Letter Organizations, and key developments in student government and education, it amplifies narratives that are often overlooked. Its broad reach ensures timely, culturally relevant information is shared with an engaged and informed community.
What do you plan on doing after graduation?
After graduation, I plan on working as a flight instructor and pursuing my Master’s in Aviation Management and continuing to meet the conditions of the United Aviate Program.
We at Watch The Yard would like to commend Ca’Shun Barr for his work as the student government president of Middle Georgia State University.
