The Most Decorated Black Athlete in Winter Olympic History Elana Meyers Taylor Inducted as Honorary Member of Sigma Gamma Rho

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. has inducted Olympic champion bobsledder Elana Meyers Taylor, the most decorated Black athlete in Winter Olympic history, as an Honorary Member. The sorority announced the induction today, Friday, July 24, 2026, during its 61st Biennial Boule in Tampa, Florida.

Elana Meyers Taylor reached the top of her sport in February 2026, when she won her first Olympic gold medal in the women’s monobob at the Milano Cortina Winter Games. The victory made her the oldest gold medalist in Winter Olympic history at age 41 and gave her six Olympic medals across five Games, more than any other Black athlete in the history of the Winter Olympics.

Meyers Taylor has represented the United States since 2007, when she made the national team in her rookie season. Over her career she has also become a four-time world champion, adding a deep collection of World Championship medals to her Olympic résumé.

Off the ice, Meyers Taylor is the mother of two sons, Nico and Noah, who are both deaf, and Nico has Down syndrome. Informed by her family’s experience, she has learned American Sign Language and become a vocal advocate for disability inclusion and greater access to support services, using her platform to reshape how the world sees children like her sons.

Meyers Taylor was inducted as part of Sigma Gamma Rho’s Honorary Membership Class of 2026, a group of women recognized during the 2026 Boule Honorary Membership Ceremony for achievements spanning sports, entertainment, education, public service, advocacy, entrepreneurship, and global humanitarian work.

The ceremony took place as Sigma Gamma Rho gathered in Tampa, Florida, for its 61st Biennial Boule under International President Marica T. Harris. In announcing the class, Harris said the 2026 honorees “embody the spirit of service, the power of purpose,” carrying forward the sorority’s mission of Greater Service, Greater Progress.
