Kappa Alpha Psi Actor Whitman Mayo Played “Grady” on Sanford and Son

Did you know that the actor who played the unforgettable Grady Wilson on Sanford and Son was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.? His name was Whitman Mayo, and he became one of the most recognizable character actors of his generation.

Whitman Blount Mayo Jr. was born on November 15, 1930, in New York City and was raised in Harlem and later Queens. As Harlem World Magazine documents, he moved to Southern California as a teenager, served in the United States Army during the Korean War, and studied at Chaffey College, Los Angeles City College, and UCLA. He was a brother of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and crossed through the Upsilon Chapter on the same line as Johnnie Cochran in the Spring of 1956.

Mayo found his greatest fame in the 1970s. He was cast as Grady Wilson, the slow-talking, good-hearted friend of Fred Sanford, on the hit sitcom Sanford and Son. The character became so beloved that Mayo was given his own spinoff series, Grady, in 1975, and he reprised the role again in later Sanford-related shows. His warm, comedic presence made Grady one of the most memorable supporting characters in television history.

His career reached far beyond that single role. As Harlem World Magazine notes, Mayo appeared in films including Boyz n the Hood, D.C. Cab, and The Main Event, and he made television appearances on shows ranging from In the Heat of the Night to Full House and Kenan and Kel.

Mayo also gave back to the next generation of Black talent. Later in life, he taught drama at Clark Atlanta University, one of the nation’s historically Black institutions, sharing the craft he had spent a lifetime mastering.

Whitman Mayo died on May 22, 2001, in Atlanta. From the streets of Harlem to the soundstages of Hollywood and the classrooms of Clark Atlanta University, Kappa Alpha Psi’s Whitman Mayo left behind a body of work that still makes audiences smile.
