Kappa Alpha Psi’s Aaron Ford Is the Democratic Nominee for Governor of Nevada

Aaron Ford, a brother of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and Nevada’s current Attorney General, has won the Democratic nomination for Governor of Nevada, setting up a November showdown for the state’s highest office.

Ford, who was initiated in Spring 1993 through the Nu Alpha Chapter at Texas A&M University, captured the June 10 Democratic primary with 63.8 percent of the vote, according to Fox5 Vegas. He now advances to the November 3, 2026 general election against Republican incumbent Governor Joe Lombardo.

The nomination is the latest milestone in a career defined by public service. In 2019, Ford became the first Black Attorney General in Nevada history. Before that, he served as the state’s Senate Majority Leader, where he worked to raise pay for state police and public employees and to expand collective bargaining rights for thousands of workers. As Attorney General, he has delivered more than $1 billion in opioid crisis settlements and taken on predatory lenders, corporate landlords, and fentanyl traffickers.

Ford’s path to this moment was anything but easy. According to his campaign biography, he became a father after his junior year of college and, a few months later, a single dad. Medicaid, food stamps, and public education helped him build a foundation. He went on to earn five degrees, including a Ph.D. in education and a law degree, while raising his family alongside his wife, Berna.

That family carries a deep Divine Nine legacy. His wife Berna Rhodes-Ford is a soror of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., initiated in Spring 1990 through the Kappa Mu Chapter at Southern Methodist University. Three of the couple’s sons have followed their father into Kappa Alpha Psi: Avery Ford (Spring 2012, Omicron Zeta Chapter), Aaron Ford II (Spring 2022, Xi Phi Chapter at the University of Nevada, Reno), and Alexander Ford (Spring 2024, Gamma Iota Chapter at Arizona State University).

As Ford turns toward November, he does so backed by a family deeply woven into Black Greekdom and a record built on service to Nevada’s working families.
