Brothers of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. traveled to the Kentucky State Capitol this week to meet with state legislators and sit in on legislative sessions, part of an effort to build awareness of the policymaking process and speak on issues affecting the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

The visit gave the Brothers a chance to tour the Capitol building and engage directly with lawmakers on matters that affect everyday Kentuckians.

During the trip, the men met with Rev. Matthew Smyzer, Executive Director of the Governor’s Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives. Smyzer, who attended on behalf of Governor Andy Beshear, spoke with the group about the role faith and community play in shaping political engagement and policy at the state level.

The Brothers also sat in on a session of the Kentucky Joint Committee on Veterans, Military Affairs, and Public Protection, observing how a legislative session runs day to day while advocating on behalf of military veterans and their families.

The Capitol visit falls during Iota Phi Theta’s Founders Week, which culminates this Saturday with the celebration of the fraternity’s 63rd Founders Day. The timing carries weight for the organization, whose founders took part in the March on Washington just weeks before establishing Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc.

For the Brothers who made the trip, engaging directly with the legislative process reflects that same tradition of civic involvement passed down from the fraternity’s founders.

“The opportunity to get involved with the very system that affects our lives daily is paramount to the overall success of our fraternity and community,” Jaden Marshall told Watch The Yard.
