A new chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has been chartered in Puerto Rico, marking the first time the 113-year-old sisterhood has established a presence on the island.
Announced via the sorority’s official social media account, the Puerto Rico Alumnae Chapter becomes the organization’s 1,079th chapter and its newest international chapter under the Eastern Region. It was chartered by 14 founding members.
Delta Sigma Theta was founded on January 13, 1913, at Howard University by 22 collegiate women. The sorority has grown into one of the largest organizations within the Divine Nine, with chapters across the United States, the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, and Europe. The chartering of the Puerto Rico Alumnae Chapter marks the organization’s first formal presence in the U.S. territory.
In a statement, the sorority said the new chapter will “serve their surrounding community as a beacon of sisterhood, service, scholarship, and social action.”
The Puerto Rico Alumnae Chapter joins a growing list of Delta Sigma Theta chapters serving communities around the world and continues the sorority’s tradition of expanding sisterhood, scholarship, service, and social action beyond the continental United States.
