The brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.’s Zeta Nu Lambda Chapter in New Jersey brought more than 500 students through their 2026 “Get Home Safe” program at Plainfield High School on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, partnering with the Plainfield Police Department to walk young people through what a traffic stop actually looks like before prom and graduation season.
The program is built around the encounters that tend to raise the most anxiety for students and officers alike. Through open dialogue, real-life scenarios, and mock traffic stop demonstrations, students learned practical ways to stay calm and informed while also getting a window into the responsibilities officers carry during a stop.
The morning ran as three one-hour sessions held back-to-back, allowing hundreds of students to take part. Officers from the Plainfield Police Department led presentations on traffic stop procedures, decision-making, personal safety, communication, and accountability.
Students then stepped into live mock pullover scenarios, experiencing the emotions of a stop from both the driver’s seat and the officer’s. The exercises were designed to build understanding and strengthen trust between youth and law enforcement.
“Our goal is simple: we want every student to get home safe,” said John Leverett, Sergeant-At-Arms of the Zeta Nu Lambda Chapter. “This program is centered on education, awareness, relationship-building, and fostering positive dialogue between our young people and the police officers who serve our community.”
Collin Daley of the Zeta Nu Lambda Chapter added, “When our young people understand their rights, responsibilities, and how to properly navigate interactions with law enforcement, we empower them to make safer decisions and help strengthen trust within our community. Programs like this can truly save lives.”
