Las Vegas’ Iconic Welcome Sign Was Just Lit Pink and Green for Alpha Kappa Alpha’s 72nd Boule

The “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign shone in pink and green on Friday, July 17, as Southern Nevada welcomed Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and the roughly 27,000 members arriving from around the world for the sorority’s 72nd International Boule.

Clark County Commissioner William McCurdy II hosted a ceremony at the landmark at 6 p.m., lighting it in the sorority’s official colors to mark the convention’s arrival and honor Alpha Kappa Alpha’s more than century-long legacy of service, scholarship, and sisterhood. Alpha Kappa Alpha dignitaries and leadership were on hand for the occasion, including International President and CEO Danette Anthony Reed.

The illumination set the stage for a week of activity at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Convention Center, where the Boule runs July 18 through July 24. Members will gather for business meetings, leadership sessions, and celebrations, alongside major service projects that include packing 15,000 weekend meals for food insecure children and a Guinness World Records attempt for Most People Assembling Hunger Relief Packages.

“Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority has been a cornerstone of service and leadership for more than a century, and we are proud to welcome its members to Clark County,” McCurdy said in a statement.

“This special illumination honors the Sorority’s 118-year legacy of service, sisterhood, scholarship, and leadership, and warmly welcomes members traveling from around the world to Southern Nevada,” said Danette Anthony Reed, Alpha Kappa Alpha’s International President and CEO.

For a sorority founded on service to all mankind, the pink-and-green glow over Las Vegas Boulevard offered a fitting welcome to a week built around giving back to the community now hosting it.
