From the Yard to the Silver Screen: Actress Vanessa Bell Calloway Is a Sorority Sister of Alpha Kappa Alpha

For nearly four decades, Vanessa Bell Calloway has been one of the most recognizable faces in Black film and television. From a princess in a beloved comedy to a leading lady on stage and screen, this Alpha Kappa Alpha soror has built a successful career that spans decades.

Calloway, born Vanessa Bell in Cleveland, Ohio, is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. As MySpirit DC notes, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Ohio University, where she was initiated into the sorority. According to BET, she became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha on April 24, 1976, at Ohio University. She also trained as a dancer under legends including Alvin Ailey and George Faison.

Calloway’s career began on the Broadway stage, where she danced in the original production of Dreamgirls. Her breakout came in 1988, when she played Princess Imani Izzi, the intended bride of Eddie Murphy’s Prince Akeem, in the classic comedy Coming to America.

From there, she became a fixture of Black cinema. According to her official biography, her filmography includes What’s Love Got to Do with It, Crimson Tide, The Inkwell, The Brothers, Cheaper by the Dozen, and more recently Harriet. On television, she has appeared in series ranging from All My Children and Under One Roof to Hawthorne, Shameless, Grey’s Anatomy, and Saints & Sinners, and she has earned eight NAACP Image Award nominations. She has also stepped behind the camera as a director and producer.

Beyond her artistry, Calloway has been candid about her personal battles in a way that has uplifted others. She was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer in 2009, underwent surgery, and became cancer-free, later sharing her journey publicly to encourage other women to prioritize their health and early detection.

From the stage of Dreamgirls to the screens of Coming to America and Harriet, Alpha Kappa Alpha’s Vanessa Bell Calloway has spent her life telling Black stories with grace and power.
