Bloody But Unbowed: 7 Ways Black Greeks Can Help Their Community In A National Crisis

[This piece was written by WatchTheYard.com Guest Writer, Alexzandria Chill]

Just about a month ago, McKinney, Texas broke the internet. We witnessed Police Officer Eric Casebolt aggressively aim a loaded gun at teenagers and use excessive and abusive force to arrest a minor who had attended a pool party gone wrong. A few weeks ago, yet another tragic act of violence was committed against the Black community. Dylann Roof, a 21 South Carolina resident, took it upon himself to attend a Bible Study and kill 9 service attendees that night. His reason: because they were black. I choose not to go into the details because it’s too painful. If you click this link, you can see the full story. If you click this link, you can see the background stories of these beautiful angels who now reside in heaven. Because of this massacre and Dylann association to the Confederate flag as a symbol of white supremacy, many have protested that the flag be taken down from government property as a sign of solidarity to past, current and future black lives. Since then, within the last 2 weeks,in retaliation to the removal of the flag, there have been several church arson cases blazing through the Southern states.

After meditating on the past few weeks, months and then damn near years, the following things came to my mind:

1) I’m tired of this

2) What are we going to do?

3) Revise the protest, march, police brutality, whatever else MIGHT HAPPEN blog, YET AGAIN, to provide some sort of support/resource for those who want to help.

Sometimes, looking towards a solution can help mitigate some of the frustration. Focusing our energy on helping our brothers and sisters in need allows us to recoup faster, problem solve better, communicate our needs and become a more sustainable community. With that being said, below you will find  7 practical ways to implement positive action now or (hopefully not) later to help your communities when they are under a national crisis.

The “We fall down, but we get up” song is getting old. HOWEVER, it must be sung because we are a resilient, courageous and determined people. It’s in our blood. It’s who we are. And it’s our fight to be won. We are community conscious and action oriented leaders of today, tomorrow and forever more.

And NPHC Members, I’m especially calling out to you. We are the seeds of Invictus. These folks aren’t heavy, and you know why.

Now go.

7 PRACTICAL WAYS TO HELP NOW!
